PAULINE A HARTWELL (NSW) – HARTWYN O.E.S

I saw Old English Sheepdogs for the first time as a teenager in England, and promptly fell in love with the breed!

However it was not until much later (1974), when living in Australia that I obtained my first Bobtail. While the dog in question, Wracklyn Sherlock Jnr. AOC, did not develop into the anticipated show quality specimen, he did become the first OES to obtain an Australian Obedience Champion title, and a wonderful member of the family, and importantly started my passion for the Breed.

Later, I purchased a puppy - linebred to Ch. Prospectblue Apollo Boy (Imp UK) – which became the foundation bitch of ‘HARTWYN’. This was Dual Ch. Penzance Blue Gytha CD CDX UD TD TDX.

I have always believed to show and Breed not only a beautiful OES but one that still shows the aptitude of a working dog.

HARTWYN reached a pinnacle in 1996 when it became the Australian and New Zealand All Breeds Kennel of the Year (as collated by National Dog magazine, and based on progeny show wins). & produced the Top Stud dog of All Breeds Australia.

This was my first home bred dog CH. HARTWYN ROYAL PAGEANT CDX. He broke many records for the Old English Sheepdog and some records still stand today.

Over the years Hartwyn dogs have enjoyed great success in the showring, including:

Best in Working Group at 3 prestigious Royal Shows (Brisbane, Launceston & Melbourne)
RUBIG at 3 Royals ( Brisbane, Sydney & Adelaide)
RUBIS Brisbane Royal.
The only OES & the only Obedience titled dog to win Best in Show at the largest All Breeds Show in Australia, Melbourne Royal.(over 6871 entry)
Many Specialty Best in Shows over the years.

We are a very small kennel but Hartwyn have Produced 47 Champions, 10 Grand Champions, 3 Supreme Champions (new title) & 59 Obedience titles, including 4 Obedience Champions. 27 different Hartwyn OES have won Best in Shows.Hartwyn have won 3 BIS and 2 RUIS at OES Australian Nationals.

In the past I have held many positions including president with the Old English Sheepdog Club of NSW. I have also served as President of the National Old English Sheepdog Council. These days I am on several DogsNSW committees (a state subsidiary of ANKC) and a delegate to ANKC.

I obtained my Working Dog judge’s licence in 2000, and now I am a Judge of the groups 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10. And I am also a Judge of all Obedience, Rally, Endurance, Tracking.

I have enjoyed Judging in all states of Australia and New Zealand, and for several Old English Specialties.

Thank you to the NL Old English Sheepdog Association for inviting me to Judge at their 2025 Show. This is the first time I will have Judged in Europe and I am looking forward to meeting your beautiful Old English Sheepdogs!
